Rear Adm (R) Syed Moazzam Ilyas, HI(M), is an experienced Naval Officer who spent over 4 decades in Operations branch. He is a graduate of PN War College, Joint Command and Staff College, UK and National Defence University and holds Master's degrees from King's College London and Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad. He also remained on the faculties of PN War College and National Defence University.
He has vast command and staff experiences spread over the entire career. While his key staff appointments include Assistant Chief of Naval Staff at Operations, Plans and C4I divisions of Naval HQ, he also served as Chief Staff Officer to Commander Pakistan Fleet. When selected for diplomatic assignment, he remained Naval and Air Attaché Pakistan, at Iran contributing to increased bilateral cooperation between two navies and air forces. He also served on the faculties of National Defence University as Chief Instructor and Deputy President of NDU and Commandant of PN War College.
Besides commanding a number of units and undertaking complete spectrum of national and multinational operational deployments, the experiences include command of Combined Task Force 150 based at Manama, Bahrain, Commander North, Commander Central Punjab and Commander COAST. Admiral also served as DG Joint Warfare & Training at JSHQ and headed Services Sports Control Board.
Admiral also served as the Executive Project Director for Gwadar Shipyard project and Secretary of Policy Board for Ship Building in Pakistan. The project, which is ongoing is likely to earn huge foreign exchange for Pakistan, create multiple job opportunities and will be a harbinger for establishing numerous downstream industries at Gawadar.
Admiral is happily married and has 5 children and a grand-daughter.
